The Power of Purpose-Driven Leadership: Reflection, Personal Growth & Grit
We talk about leadership A LOT. But what is purpose-driven leadership? Well…it isn’t just about the bottom line or meeting deadlines, it’s so much more. It’s about having a sense of purpose that guides every decision, every action, and every relationship you build. At Nova Leadership, we believe that purpose-driven leadership goes far beyond the day-to-day. It’s a deeper connection to who you are and how you show up in the world. Let’s get into it.
What Is Purpose-Driven Leadership?
“Purpose is deeply emotional. This is why we feel passion and intense drive when we are involved with something that has purpose. And it’s why we get that sick feeling when we do something in violation of that purpose…because a true sense of purpose is deeply emotional, it serves as a compass to guide us to act in a way completely consistent with our values and beliefs…Purpose is about the quality of life. Purpose is human, not economic.”
This comes from one of the contemporary thought leaders we follow: Simon Sinek, in his “Purpose Cannot Be Rationalized” post.
When you lead with purpose, you feel driven. You’re motivated! You feel on top of the world! You’re aligned with who you are at your very core, and that makes the work meaningful - and that’s our goal, right? What happens when you start to stray from that path? That’s when you get the uncomfortable feeling that we’ve all probably experienced before. That strange feeling in your gut that something just isn’t right. Purpose is what keeps you centered and aligned with your values, and when you’re off-track, it’s a reminder to return to what matters most.
Why Reflection & Personal Growth Matter
The corporate world can be a blur, and it’s easy to lose sight of your purpose with all the meetings, emails, and never-ending to-do lists. That’s why we emphasize the importance of reflection and introspection, especially during turbulent times. We dive deeper into this in one of our past blogs that talks about knowing your why (also a classic Sinek TED Talk. If you’ve not seen it in a while, here’s the link).
When the outside world feels like it’s spiraling (and right now it may feel that way more than it should), it’s even more critical to look inside and reconnect with what’s foundational to you. Who are you? What do you stand for? And how can you show up today and every day in a way that’s aligned with your values and your purpose? Here are a few simple ideas:
Start each day with intention: Consider: how do I want to show up today? What do I want people to see in me today? How can I live into my purpose? What action(s) can I take to show people what’s important to me?
Practice resets as needed throughout the day: Even a few minutes of quiet, intentional deep breathing can make a difference when the pressure mounts. Take a walk at lunch, or go outside for a break to (literally) get grounded
At the end of the day, reflect: What went well? What’s on the horizon for tomorrow? What do I want to do differently? More of? Less of? How can I actively demonstrate my values, and support others in doing the same?
These are not time-consuming practices. We’re not suggesting that you find a quiet meditation room for 20-30 minutes or take an extended lunch for forest bathing. As little as 5-10 minutes can be an effective practice. And that’s what it is: practice.
Building Grit
It takes grit to stay on track when everything around you seems uncertain. Let’s face it: purpose-driven leadership is not for the faint of heart. It requires a deep commitment to your values, even when it feels like everything is pushing you in the opposite direction. Grit is that inner strength that keeps you moving forward, even when the road gets tough.
At Nova Leadership, we understand what it feels like to be stuck in a cycle where achievement is high and fulfillment is low. We know what it’s like to be successful by all external measures, but still feel like something’s missing. We often say, “We know you, because we ARE you.” We spent years in the corporate world, always striving to do more and be more, but it wasn’t until we aligned our work with purpose that we truly found fulfillment. And that’s what we want for you.
Purpose-Driven Leadership Starts with You
Creating a life and career that aligns with your purpose isn’t a luxury, it’s your right. The journey towards purpose-driven leadership starts with a pivot: taking the time to pause, to reflect, and align your actions with your core values. It’s not about getting things done; it’s about doing things that matter.
That’s why we started Nova Leadership in 2015 with the clear mission to help leaders discover the brilliance within themselves and shine. We believe that when leaders are aligned with their purpose, they not only show up better for themselves, but for their families, their communities and their teams as well. And we also know it’s not about perfection - it’s about progress. Wondering where to start? Consider:
