Gratitude-Driven Leadership: A Modern Guide to Managing Tasks & Inspiring People
At Nova Leadership, we strongly believe that it’s not just what you do - but how you lead that really matters. And if you’re a conscientious leader, we know that you’re probably always on the hunt for new ways to manage your team more effectively while supporting and boosting the morale of the group. Something that can easily get overlooked and can be an important tool is leading with gratitude. The Center for Creative Leadership points out that grateful leaders are more likely to create workplaces rooted in empathy, loyalty, and long-term success. And building loyalty and long-term success is the goal, right? So let’s consider how you can get there.
Why Gratitude Matters in Leadership
When we think of incorporating gratitude at work, we do not mean just rattling off a quick “thank you” to your coworkers in an email. It’s about shifting the culture to make more of an effort to recognize when someone goes above and beyond. A recent Harvard Health article highlights that gratitude is closely linked to greater happiness and can help people:
Improve their health
Navigate challenges better
Encourage innovation
Strengthen relationships and build trust
Experience more positive emotions and boost motivation
Building a Gratitude-Centric Routine
We’re proud to say we have a very active daily gratitude practice at Nova Leadership. We make sure that gratitude stays front and center in our leadership and strategic planning. Our approach to simple and impactful gratitude strategies is a way to ensure that appreciation is built into how we plan, decide, and grow together. Our team includes gratitude in every level of planning. We’ve included some examples on how to incorporate this yourself:
Daily: thoughtful, specific, intentional thank you’s
Weekly: shout-outs for your team or handwritten notes to show your appreciation
Quarterly: formal and public recognition during a retreat or event
Annually: vision reset for the entire organization
We consistently incorporate intentional gratitude practices into our Women’s Leadership Retreat, and the results speak for themselves! We saw that gratitude has the ability to change conversations and strengthen connections. We saw gratitude change hearts, perspectives, and move leaders to a more hopeful and optimistic point of view. And we reminded these women of just how important it is to be grateful to wonderful YOU. The Contagious Effect of Gratitude
Have you ever been around a super energetic person and found yourself smiling the whole time you were talking to them? Think of gratitude in the same light. The more you give, the more it spreads, and the more people will want to reciprocate. Research shows that expressing appreciation activates positive emotion centers in both the giver AND the receiver. That’s the contagious effect of gratitude! Try simple but consistent actions like:
Start your meetings by sharing one thing you are thankful for, and ask others to do the same. You’ll be surprised at the change in tone of the meeting.
Celebrate and recognize the small wins. Know that they don’t always have to be large to get noticed. Small steps and practices add up to big results.
Model gratitude publicly so others feel safe doing the same. Public gratitude is a form of leadership vulnerability, and we could all use a little more vulnerability and authenticity in the workplace.
Simple tactics like these can be transformative. They help you lead with empathy and authenticity, which are two qualities that define strong, modern leadership. It’s a win/win!
